For most small businesses, having a Facebook page and building it’s audience is a must. There are a few different businesses that may not benefit from having a Facebook page, such as a funeral home, or an insurance company.
I’ve marketed for insurance companies before. They are tough to get going. I think most people see it as a boring business and to be honest, it was hard to find material to post that was entertaining or interesting enough for the followers. You can soon come to the end of funny videos that are tasteful enough to post and educational content on defensive driving.
Building your Facebook audience can be fun. It can also be a great way to promote your business further afield. Facebook is still a very popular method, and only today I saw that my 82-year-old uncle has just created an account for himself. People go onto Facebook at all hours of the day and night. If they wake up in the night, they go onto it.
If you want to know more about how to build your audience on Facebook, here are a few pointers:
Start with your personal Facebook page. Yes, it will be seen by your friends and family but that’s fine. You’ve come a long way, you’re proud of what you’ve achieved and you need to show that on your page. Create a fabulous cover image, add a link to your website and any other social media profiles that you have.
Create a Facebook Page. Now that you’ve set yourself up with a professional looking profile, now it’s time to create a Facebook business page. Your business page should have a link that goes directly to your website. Ideally, it will link to a landing page that gives access to a great freebie so that you can collect email addresses for your subscriber list. Your Facebook page needs to be developed with the idea of being a place to share information including links to your blog posts and a place where you can run advertisements to your target market.

Create a Niche Group. The reason you also need to create a niche group is so that you can help your audience further. This will help them get to know you and for you understand more about them. To get started, think about what their main issues are that you can help them with. This should then one of the purposes of the group.
Join Niche Groups. Search for groups where your target audience is spending time. Now join and just sit back and observe the group. Once you can confirm that these people are part of your audience, now you can start being nice to people. Be a good resource of knowledge for them and answer questions. Don’t spam these groups with your group. Once you engage with people, they will become curious, take a look at your profile and find out more about you.
Be a Good Resource. Whether it’s in your group, or others, put your focus on how you can help. You want to be recognised as a helper, as this is what is going to help to grow your audience. Collect information and answer questions. You could also create blog posts from the questions and answers.
Go Live. Now that you’ve got a good foundation on Facebook with your profile, your business page and a group, it’s time to do a live session on Facebook. This will help with growing your audience. Use your phone or your computer, it’s possible to do a very good live event. Look into whether you want to use Open Broadcast Software to help you share your screen and more on Facebook and on YouTube.

Promote Your Page and Group. You can currently only run ads on a Facebook page. So be sure to post your blog posts on your Facebook page and into your group. You can then use the Boost function to get these posts seen by more people who you can select. Facebook offers highly targeted advertising so once you understand who your audience is, you should be able to reach them.
Share Content Often. Keep your page and your group active. You may want to use automation to help you post every day, sometimes more than once a day into both your page and your group. It’s possible to schedule your posts in your page and your group with Facebook scheduling tool. You’ll find this as one of the options. This makes it far easier to add more content.
Engage with Others Often. Give good ‘customer service’. Mingle with your followers, talk to them and answer any questions that they have. They are far more likely to stick around this way.
Promote your page and group. Whether you mention it in your emails, link to it in your email signature or add a button on your website, be sure to let people know that you have a Facebook page and a group.
I run a couple of different Facebook pages for my clients and have done for many years. Even when you know your audience, they can still surprise you with their reactions.
Building your audience on Facebook is not so hard to do, just as long as you focus on their needs. It does take time and commitment but it’s worth it.
